Grosh's Lawn Service Tip of the Week! Not too late to schedule our Fall Fertilizer Application to YOUR TURF! “Researches are now finding that a fall fertilization program is creating additional benefits that can carry well into next year” Ohio State University recent studies show overall plant/turfgrass physiological health is improved for the following season with a fall Fertilizer application vs. turf that is untreated at the end of the growing season. Fall fertilization also helps turf recover more quickly from summer stress, maintaining a green turf color into early winter while providing quick green-up in the spring. Fall Fertilization also can help the turf grow deeper roots during the spring according to J. Copeland. One call will do it all. Contact Tom NOW! It's not to late in the year. Grosh's Lawn Service Tip of the Week! 1. Myth: The best time to replace the lawn is in the spring, as plants get ready to bloom. Reality: Sowing seed in the spring sets one up for potential problems, as heat sets in during the summer months and weeds compete for space. The best time to sow seed is in the fall when the temperatures are more consistent and highly competitive weeds, like crabgrass, have gone dormant. To learn more, give us a call at 301.842.0062. Renovating on a Budget If your budget is limited, you might want to consider a long-term renovation plan. Tackling certain areas of your landscape one year at a time will enable you to renovate as money allows. Working with what you already have can help you to stay within budget as well. Moving plants to other areas, repairing and repainting an existing fence, or pruning existing trees and shrubs are all cost-effective ways to improve your landscape's looks. New hanging baskets or a few new shrubs can also be added inexpensively. If you don't mind waiting for them to mature, smaller, younger plants are usually less costly than larger ones. For best results, make sure that any new landscape plants you choose match the growing conditions for your property. If conditions aren't right, you might end up having to replace your new plantings in the near future. As always, Grosh's Lawn Service is here to help with any new landscape project you have in mind. From consultation and planning to design and installation, we do it all. Give us a call today at 301.842.0062 to get started! Or, visit our website at www.GroshsLawnService.com.

Tip #20

Grosh's Lawn Service Tip of the Week! Common Dandelion This perennial overwinters as a small rosette of leaves. Seedlings grow from a taproot, and begin to emerge in early spring when soil temperatures reach 50 degrees F. For early- season control of weeds that overwintered, apply a postemergent herbicide to turf early in the spring when temperatures are still cool. Properly mow, water and fertilizer lawns to encourage healthy growth and minimize thin turf.

Tip #19

Grosh's Lawn Service Tip of the Week! A “dense vegetative cover of turf grass” on a lawn reduces pollution and runoff. If your lawn is thin and sickly, pollution and runoff from a lawn increases dramatically. In other words, the healthier a lawn, the better it is at controlling pollution that can affect water quality in the Potomac River, Antietam Creek, Licking Creek, Conococheague Creek, Tom's Run and eventually the Chesapeake Bay. E-mail Tom today to schedule your 2014 lawn treatment program.

Tip #18

Grosh's Lawn Service Tip of The Week! Grub Control for 2014 Grubs were very active in 2013. You may want to consider a preventative grub control application if you are not scheduled for one. The preventative application does not need to be watered in. Any curative treatments (after grubs are present and doing damage) must be watered in (per the label- "the label is the law" ) to move the active ingredient into the grub feeding zone to stop grub feeding. Curative treatments are more costly than preventative applications. Generally, by the time grub damage is noticed, watering / rainfall would be necessary not only to move the product in but to also help the lawn recover from the grub damage which can be substantial depending on insect populations.

Tip #17

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Chesapeake Bay Program pulled together a “panel of experts” to look at lawns, lawn care and the impact lawns have on water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. The expert panel’s conclusion, based upon a review of all the science and research done on the topic, was that a “dense vegetative cover of turf grass” on a lawn reduces pollution and runoff. If your lawn is thin and sickly, pollution and runoff from a lawn increases dramatically. In other words, the healthier a lawn, the better it is at controlling pollution that can affect water quality in streams and rivers, and eventually the Chesapeake Bay. By G. Robertson

Tip #16

Before sending your live-cut Christmas tree to the trash, remember that it can find new life after the holidays are over. The trees can be recycled into a variety of uses, including mulch, compost and wildlife habitat. Think of the wonderful roosting spot that the tree will provide for the wild birds close to your bird feeder this winter. Mulching, chipping or composting Christmas trees after the holidays is a wise alternative to just throwing them in landfills and uses up no space at the landfill. Everyone who uses a live-cut Christmas tree should really consider chipping, composting or wildlife use for their Christmas trees. By adding your chipped up tree to your home gardens you can improve soil quality, helps stores moisture in the soil and reduces bare soil for weeds to germinate. Consider using Christmas trees to create outdoor brush piles that will make a wonderful home for wildlife. Trees can also be weighted down and sunk in farm ponds to attract fish and increase habitat. Grosh’s Lawn Service will gladly accept all Christmas trees at our farm this season and put them to good use. Merry Christmas to ALL!!

Tip #15

The leaves look beautiful on the lawn with all the brilliant colors this time of year but think twice before you allow all the leaves to accumulate on your lawn or landscape plants. If the leaves are not removed, the blanket of leaves can suffocate your grass or your plants in the landscape beds and block them from getting the sunlight, water and nutrients that they need to service. A good rule of thumb is that if you cant’s see the grass or plants through the leaves, then the grass cant’ grow or the plants will die due to lack of oxygen.

Tip #14

Grosh's Lawn Service Tip of The Week! Aeration is one of the most beneficial things that you can do to help your lawn. Aeration is achieved by using a gas powered machine that removes thousands of small plugs of soil from your lawn that has become compacted over time. Have you had your lawn aerated? Aeration should be done every year to achieve the best results and to promote a green, healthy lawn! Call or e-mail Tom Grosh today @ Tom@GroshsLawnService.com to get on our schedule to help your lawn and protect our earth!

Tip #13

Grosh's Lawn Service Tip of the Week! Annual grasses like crabgrass are extremely aggressive. Without treatment, they'll thin and choke out your good grass as they compete for growing space in your lawn.

Tip #12

What does the 4th of July mean to you? Are you grateful for the soldiers who sacrificed their lives and the soldiers who have returned with scarred bodies and minds for our freedom? I am thankful. Thank time this July 4th holiday and thank a veteran for their service to our country and say a prayer for the ones who have given the ultimate gift of laying down their life for their fellow man! May GOD BLESS AMERICIA!

Tip #11

Grosh’s Lawn Service Tip of the Week! Grass and other plants take in carbon dioxide from the air plus water from their roots and turn them onto oxygen, as well as a simple kind of sugar that plants use for food to thrive and stay healthy. This is why lawn treatments help the grass receive the proper nutrients and to also keep the weeds under control.

Tip #10

Grosh's Lawn Service Lawn Tip of the Week! A healthy lawn that is weed free and has the proper amount of fertilizer applied to the lawn is of utmost importance to our local environment and the Potomac River.

Lawns cool the atmosphere. Eight healthy front lawns have the cooling effect of 70 tons of air conditioning, which is enough for 16 average homes. Call today 301.842.0062 to have Tom stop and discuss your lawn care and landscaping needs or e-mail Tom@GroshsLawnService.com

Tip #2

While pruning, trimming and thinning can certainly be done any time of the year, most trees and shrubs respond best if they're pruned, trimmed or thinned in the fall or winter (while they're dormant). Call now to schedule an appointment to have Tom stop and discuss your tree and shrub care needs.

Tip #1

Pre-Emergents Are the Key to Controlling Grassy Weeds Annual grasses like crabgrass are extremely aggressive. Without treatment, they'll thin and choke out your good grass as they compete for growing space in your lawn. In just a few years, you could be left with little or no healthy turf. A short life span enables annual grasses to mature quickly, appearing in your lawn without any warning. Though post-emergent herbicides are available to treat annual grasses after they sprout, preventing them from appearing in the first place is the best way to keep your lawn thick and healthy. Early spring is the ideal time to take preventative measures. By applying pre-emergent herbicides, Grosh's Lawn Service can help to eliminate the chances of annual grasses establishing a foothold in your lawn this growing season.
